Toggle20 Routes by the Sea in the province of Alicante
1. Benitatxell Cliffs Route
- Difficulty: Easy
We start this selection of routes along the Costa Blanca with one of our favorites. We move to the north of the province of Alicante, to the coast of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, famous for its impressive cliffs and beautiful coves with crystal clear waters. This route has become very popular in recent years, and deservedly so: it is a simple route that will allow us to enjoy excellent views and, if the weather is good, to swim in one of the last unspoiled coves in the province: Cala LLebeig.
Due to its popularity, again we recommend visiting it out of season, and avoid holidays or weekends. As in the Cova Tallada, we are in natural environments subject to high environmental pressure, so it is advisable to take extreme care: do not leave garbage, do not damage the flora or fauna, do not leave the path, etc.
2. Ascent to Penyal d’Ifac
- Difficulty: Easy up to the tunnel / Medium-High after that.
The Peñón de Ifach or Penyal d’Ifac (in Valencian) is a magnificent rocky mass of 332 meters high, located in the municipality of Calp/Calpe. From its summit, we will enjoy extraordinary views. This great rock is a symbol of the Costa Blanca, a landscape landmark of the first order. It was declared a Natural Park in 1987, being today the most visited protected area of the Valencian Community. This figure of protection, fortunately, has allowed the conservation of endemic species of flora, which only grow here (worldwide), defying gravity, winds and sea salt. It has also allowed the rock to be a refuge for many species of birds, whose habitat is unfortunately diminishing as the urbanized area of our province increases. For all this, and much more, Penyal d’Ifac certainly deserves a place in this list of routes to enjoy the coast!
3. L’Albir Lighthouse Route
- Difficulty: Very Easy
- Suitable for baby strollers and wheelchairs
We visited the Natural Park of the Serra Gelada, to enjoy one of its most popular routes: the pleasant and accessible walk to the Lighthouse of l’Albir. A route suitable for all ages, that we like so much that we can not fail to recommend. This simple walk starts at the visitor reception center of l’Albir. From here, two and a half kilometers of asphalted track separate us from the old lighthouse. Throughout the entire route, we will enjoy excellent views of the Bay of Altea, as well as the mountains of the area, and the Penyal d’Ifac itself on the horizon. Not to be missed!
4. Return to the island of Nueva Tabarca
- Difficulty: Easy
The island of Nueva Tabarca, off the coast of Cabo de Santa Pola, honors one of its names -Isla Plana- and allows us to enjoy a very simple route full of cultural and natural attractions. This is an ideal route for the summer season, although we recommend avoiding the months of July and August due to the greater influx of visitors.
During the tour along the 2 kilometers of the island we can visit its different coves and beaches, as well as cultural elements of great relevance: the medieval wall and its gates, the Tower of San José, the lighthouse… Don’t miss our article about Tabarca to know all the details. Don’t miss our article on Tabarca to know all the details, and don’t leave the island without diving into its seabed, declared a nature reserve since 1986 -the first of its kind in Spain-.
5. The Coastal Path of Vila Joiosa
- Difficulty: Easy
We are now going to know a route belonging to the municipality of La Vila Joiosa, a beautiful town with seafaring tradition. This linear path will allow us to enjoy a stretch of undeveloped coastline, about 4 kilometers long, between Platja el Torres and Cala de Finestrat. A simple route with many attractions, such as the beautiful naturist cove El Racó del Conill, or the old watchtower for the defense of the coast: the Torre del Aguiló.
6. The Tallada Cave (Xàbia)
- Difficulty: Medium
We return to the region of the Marina Alta to recommend a route that by now many already know. The Cova Tallada is an impressive cavern by the sea, half natural and half artificial, hidden among the cliffs of the Marine Reserve of Cap de Sant Antoni, halfway between Dènia and Xàbia. It is a destination that, sadly, has been in the news for the overcrowding it has suffered in recent years, especially in the summer months.
We suggest you visit it now, out of season, and if possible on a weekday. We suggest you access it as what it is: a sacred place, a temple of nature, a gateway to the interior of Mother Earth. Try to cross its threshold in silence, letting the murmur of the waves be the only sound that resounds in the high vaults of the grotto. Listen in silence, let yourself be invaded by the echo of its rocks, for only in this way will you discover the true treasure that it holds…
7. The ecological trail of Benissa
- Difficulty: Easy
This simple walk along the coast of Benissa through an ecological trail will take us to visit some of the most beautiful coves of the Marina Alta (and the province), such as Cala Baladrar. A very simple route suitable for all audiences, with explanatory panels to better understand and appreciate our environmental heritage, and realize how privileged we are to live in a place like this.
