A mountain range that, despite attracting attention when we drive next to it on the A-31, usually receives very few visits from people who love mountains and hiking.<\/p><p>In 2008, I climbed it for the first time, thus publishing this article and giving the mountain the nickname &#8220;<strong>the forgotten saw<\/strong> &#8220;. Since then, things have changed somewhat, and &#8220;<em>la Fontcalent<\/em> &#8220;is becoming more and more well-known, if only as a result of the perimeter confinement due to Covid&#8230;<\/p><p>In data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>From the Fontcalente penitentiary (we can also start at the Pol\u00edgono de las Atalayas) we approach the base of the mountain, in search of a pass through which we gain the ridge of the mountain range. The final part of the climb to the pass is steep and with a section of smooth rock, having to overcome a <strong>climb<\/strong> .<\/p><p>The climb is not very difficult for accustomed people, although it can be a small challenge (salvable) for people without experience. There used to be a rope at this point, but it seems to be gone.<\/p><p>Once at the pass, we follow the crest of the mountain range, with beautiful and aerial steps, to the geodesic vertex of the mountain range, in its western part. Among the pieces found, a necklace, arrowheads and other elements, which can be visited at the <strong>MARQ<\/strong> . An interpretive route that, starting from <strong>El Rebolledo<\/strong> , takes a tour around the mountain range, visiting the aggregate quarries and explaining the different attacks suffered by the mountain range, as well as its <strong>environmental and heritage values<\/strong> . The last edition was held in 2019, with a wide participation. You can find out more <a href=\"https:\/\/salvemosfontcalent.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the platform&#8217;s blog<\/a> or on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/salvemfontcalent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its facebook page<\/a> . <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e4b4c0f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e4b4c0f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Route Description<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2af77697 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2af77697\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The route I followed on that first ascent (in 2008) was &#8220;my own harvest&#8221;, since there was no reference or any short-distance path in Fontwarming. I opted for what I considered the best place to climb and tried to follow existing paths and\/or paths.<\/p><p><strong>Update:<\/strong> In 2011, Jos\u00e9 M\u00aa Salcedo undertook the signaling project for the path leading up to Fontcalent, with white and blue markings. You can read his <a href=\"http:\/\/arquitecturadirecta.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/ruta-senderismo-fontcalent-por-jose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">description of the route here<\/a> .<\/p><p>We start from the penitentiary center (or from the Pol\u00edgono de las Atalayas, with easier access from the motorway). In the first meters, we pass by a small mining pond.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/3097\/2442491087_e09185de50.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1130\" width=\"479\" height=\"500\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/3118\/2442487899_9292bb1ebd.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1139\" width=\"479\" height=\"500\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/p><p>Shortly after we passed by a water tank. At this point we find the Taibilla channels. We always go straight, without taking detours. We will come across the red and white markings of the <a href=\"https:\/\/senders.femecv.com\/es\/sendero\/ver\/gr-125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GR-125<\/a> , &#8220;La Senda del Poeta Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez&#8221;. We continue straight. Soon the road will end, and we will have to look for a weakly marked &#8220;path&#8221;, we will have to put our tracking sense to the test.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/2103\/2443318572_e0705df179.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1136\" width=\"500\" height=\"343\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/p><p>The path brings us closer little by little to what, at first glance, seems to be the only weak point through which we can avoid the vertical step that protects the top of Fontcalent. <\/p><p>The path finally leads us to the foot of the mountain. The path becomes more rocky, and little by little the slope increases. We pass by large rocks that seem to have fallen from the heights.<\/p><p>Thus we finally reach the most delicate section: first a small quarry, and then a section of rock where it will be necessary to use your hands. The quarry is saved by its right margin.<\/p><p>At this point we find some more vegetation and further on some good-sized bushes, and even a small pine. I am struck by the orange formations that I find in some rocks. These are flint nodules, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senderosdealicante.com\/geologicos\/historia2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as we can read here<\/a> .<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-formaciones-roca.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-formaciones-roca.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"538\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-formaciones-roca.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-formaciones-roca-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-formaciones-roca-768x516.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p><p>After passing the quarry, there is a uniform section of rock, with a fairly high slope. There used to be a fixed rope here, but it seems to be gone. After overcoming this step, we reach the pass, already in the mountain range. It can be said that we have done the most complicated.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170157.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170157.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"834\" height=\"960\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170157.jpg 834w, https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170157-261x300.jpg 261w, https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170157-768x884.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 834px) 100vw, 834px\" \/><\/a><\/p><p>From here, following the <strong>crest<\/strong> of the mountain range, we head towards the west, where the <strong>geodesic vertex<\/strong> is located. The views are well worth it: we are very close to Alicante, and the city can be seen perfectly, with the sea in the background.<\/p><p>To the north, views of the Sierra del Vent\u00f3s and <strong>Sierra del Maigm\u00f3<\/strong> . Further to the west, what I suppose must be the landfill of Alicante, flown over by dozens of hungry seagulls. We can also see the route of the Ave, which, as we remember, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/manantial-agua-caliente-fontcalent-destruido\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">destroyed the old Fontcalent fountain<\/a> .<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170168.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"563\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170168.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170168-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.linkalicante.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/serra-fontcalent-P1170168-768x450.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p><p>On the other hand, to the east, we have views of Penya Migjorn, Cabe\u00e7\u00f3 d&#8217;Or, Puig Campana&#8230;<\/p><p>As I was saying, we follow the crest of the mountain range in an easterly direction. In some sections, we walk on a ridge a few meters wide. I find some curious &#8220;painted&#8221; lime, that the truth is, I don&#8217;t know what function they have. A short stop for a bite to eat and&#8230; in the distance, towards the end of the ridge, I spot what appears to be a geodesic vertex pylon. Vegetation, remains of animals (removed earth and excrement).<\/p><p>Near the geodesic vertex, I find a <strong>Meridinal Smooth Snake<\/strong> (Coronella girondica) (identified thanks to <strong>Emilio Rosillo<\/strong> , a great defender of Fontcalent). Unfortunately, she appears dead, apparently, not too long ago.<\/p><p>Without a doubt, this saw <strong>does not deserve the mistreatment<\/strong> it has been suffering for many years.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/3145\/2443307324_7ed52cd75c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1202\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"><\/p><p>Finally, we reach the geodesic vertex. Has he behaved so badly with these lands and their people, whom he saw born and watched from his heights? The answer is <strong>NO, of course not<\/strong> .<\/p><p>It&#8217;s time to go back.
